Fred Dietz Floral and Gifts

Fred Dietz Floral opened in 1959 and is still a family-run business. It is now run by Fred’s son Ed Dietz and his wife, Kate, who took over when Fred retired in 1983. Ed began working in the store at age 12 and continued working there, at least part-time, even when he had his own interior design business designing bars and restaurants. Kate grew up in Bellevue, and Ed grew up just past the border in Ross Township.

Fred Dietz Floral and Gifts provides flower arrangements for all occasions. They also make a wide variety of gift baskets such as fruit and gourmet baskets. The shop was one of the first to design balloon arrangements and wedding cakes made out of flowers. They are one of the only floral shops that still hand wires corsages instead of using glue and magnets, and customers come from afar to purchase these. The shop is also one of only a very few floral shops that create special symbols (such as the Marine and Mason logos) out of flowers for funerals.

Ed and Kate love a challenge.  “There’s not much we don’t do.” They recall making a guitar-shaped flower sculpture and another time creating a fairyland theme with tree sculptures and lights for a wedding. They do about 50 weddings a year in Allegheny County and beyond. Whatever the event or project, they go to great lengths to satisfy their customers.

The shop floor is full of home and garden accessories, plants, and much more. In one corner is a women’s section that carries purses, scarves, clothing, and several lines of jewelry at a variety of prices. The kindness of the owners shines through when Ed explains that he will not carry any jewelry lines carried by his neighbors Fodi’s Jewelers or Erin’s Hallmark stores. Another section of the store is filled with baby items.

An entire floor is devoted to antiques. The rooms are full of furniture, glasswork, clocks, china, lamps, quilts, and much more. In addition to antique sales, Ed and Kate use their knowledge to do appraisals of antiques for attorneys and others.

Ed and Kate enjoy being part of the lives of their customers. They are able to share the happy times and the sad times with people they have come to know over many years.

Stop in and say hello to Ed and Kate!
