Brian Buck dreamed of starting a skateboard store ever since his sophomore year of college at IUP where he was a business major. He started skateboarding in 1995 on homemade obstacle courses in his driveway and hoped to meld that passion with his growing interest in small business. After college he moved in with a roommate who lived in the North Boroughs and shortly thereafter opened Plank Eye Board Shop on Sheridan Avenue.    

     The shop carries Vox and Lakai skate shoes, Dickies shorts, t-shirts, hats, socks, drinks and snacks, and a wide variety of skateboard components, including decks (the wooden part), wheels, ball bearings, and other hardware. Services include skateboard repair and lessons that are advertised on the shop’s website. The website also contains a comprehensive guide to skateboard parks and plazas in the Pittsburgh area.

     One of those skating spots is located in Bellevue. Brian was one of the people who advocated for the skate plaza, and he attended many council and committee meetings before the plaza became a reality. Skaters often travel from other states to try out the Bellevue Skate Plaza and visit Plank Eye Board Shop.

     Plank Eye Board Shop sponsors a skate team of approximately 10 skaters. These skaters “get footage” of their accomplishments and can qualify as amateurs if sponsored by the companies that manufacture skateboard components. The skaters can travel all over to skate or they can use the skate plaza in Bayne Memorial Park.

     The name of the shop is based on the Bible verse in Matthew 7:3 – “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?” Brian wanted to incorporate Christ’s call to be nonjudgmental in the shop’s name. He sees the business as a combination of his love of skateboarding and Jesus. Brian currently has one employee, Matt Hilliard.
